Chaya Leah Sufrin serves many roles in the Long Beach, California Jewish community. She is the Education Director at Shul by the Shore, Long Beach where she oversees the Hebrew school and adult education classes, as well as serves as assistant to the Rabbi. She is the high school Jewish History Chair at the Hebrew Academy in Huntington Beach, and also serves as a Jewish educator for Beach Hillel at California State University Long Beach. Recently, the Alevy Family Foundation awarded her a grant in Jewish Community Engagement, through which Chaya Leah is building community across Jewish Long beach, reaching and engaging young adults, young families, and students.
Chaya Leah is a native of Long Beach and has chosen this wonderful city to raise her 4 sons, together with her husband, Boruch. The Sufrins have an open Shabbat table where you can find an eclectic mix of guests almost every Friday night. Chaya Leah was raised and lives in the chasidic world of the Chabad community, yet she loves pop culture and is as knowledgeable as any of her students about music, movies and current affairs. As such, she offers a unique perspective on preserving Jewish values in a modern world, always delivered with humor, wisdom and unusual insight into the timeless messages and lessons in Judaism. This year Chaya Leah was awarded the 40 Under 40 Award from the mayor of Long Beach and she is the recipient of the Neuberger Young Leadership Award from the Jewish Federation Of Long Beach.
